Recently we have seen a slew of unauthorized reviews and previews of new Intel Based P55 chipset motherboards and their related Core i5 processors. Overclockers over at the Xtremesystems.com forums have posted previews of setups running well over 4 GHz. as seen here and here. Both setups are running MSI P55 based boards.
With these impressive results there is a lot of speculation as to how Intel will compete not with AMD but with itself. The ultra high end Core i7 CPU’s and X58 chipsets have demanded a price premium, with this premium there comes a very healthy profit margin that is seldom enjoyed on more mainstream products. With The core i5 Processors slated to be released next month along with a slew of new motherboards based on Intel’s P55 chipset and 1156 socket. It’s going to be interesting to see how this will affect the sales of new Core i7 systems. After all while the price points of the CPU’s have not been confirmed they are expected to be below that of current Core i7 setups. Some P55 motherboards are expected to debut at or below the $100.00 price point. If the Core i5 CPU’s come in at or near current Core 2 Duo and Quad CPU’s this should make for very interesting completion.
Further more if the performance of these products holds up in the mass market this could result in many early adopters of Intel’s core i7 setups feeling a little taken advantage of. So far the only apparent difference from the i7 and i5 CPU’s is the lack of an integrated triple channel memory controller as the i5 based CPU’s feature a dual channel integrated controller similar to that found in the current p45 chipsets for Core 2 duo systems. Some performance reviews have shown that while the performance gain achieved in moving from single to dual channel is quite impressive, going from dual to triple channel is minimal at best.
